“Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” is a phrase that conjures memories of unique and lovable characters, educational topics and songs that are still popular 40 years after their creation. Sesame Street first aired on Nov. 10, 1969 and since then, became the longest running children’s program on American television.

The lecturers that evening included Frank Oz (Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster), Kevin Clash (Elmo), Caroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar), Sonia Manzano (Maria), Bob McGrath (Bob), Marty Robinson (Telly Monster and Snuffy), Fran Brill (Zoe and Prairie Dawn), David Rudman (Baby Bear) and writer Tony Geiss. Michael Davis, author of “Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street” was the moderator for the event.

The event itself was a memorial tribute to Richard Hunt, who provided the score for “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show.” In a tribute to Hunt, guest Tony Geiss sang “Proud to a Cow.” The lecture gave the audience insight into how “Sesame Street” became such a success.

It began with the writers, who were comedy actors that discovered their comedic talents could also bring a fun and new way to educate kids. Fran Brill discussed how when she was looking for a job she answered an ad by calling the Jim Henson company and spoke to Jim Henson himself, proving how small the company was when they first began production.

Davis, asked Caroll Spinney if it was fun to write for Oscar and as a surprise for the children, Oscar appeared. The audience was also treated to a conversation from Elmo and Oscar who discussed their likes and dislikes. During this conversation, children in the audience saw how the puppets were small but also kept protected, the puppets themselves are in plastic bags, then placed in black bags for traveling purposes.

Manazano said her favorite part of the show was “Kermit’s rendition of “Being Green.” Over the years many changes had been made to the show including switching the actors who played Bert and Ernie and adding Hispanics to the cast.

The idea behind the show always remained getting adults to watch educational and entertaining television with their children. After 40 years “Sesame Street” has continued to evolve and adapt to the current issues of each generation. we hope you liked our free elmo coloring pages.
